The Brain Switch system is an innovative brain-computer interaction (BCI) tool which helps patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and other motor function disabilities to communicate more effectively with their caretakers. However, there is a need for a system in which caretakers and family members of the patient can communicate with in case of any problems or doubts pertaining to the tool and its accompanying mobile application. The goal of this project is to develop and test an easily scalable and deployable chatbot to help improve communication between multiple caregivers, patients with ALS, and the Brain Switch research team and to share their experiences and difficulties with the Brain Switch system. The main priorities in selecting the correct stack for the chatbot implementation is to keep the patient’s information private, to make it easy and hassle-free to install for the users, it should be able to send and receive diverse media files, and it should communicate in multiple languages. The resulting chatbot system—which was developed using Landbot Chatbot Builder—corresponds to all of the aforementioned requirements. Moreover, the system is connected to a secure, online database that stores the daily survey and customer support participation data submitted daily by caretakers and family members. The chatbot is also very simple and accessible to deploy for users via a URL link which can be accessed and filled via multiple devices.

Estimating Electron Transfer Kinetics for Flow Battery Electrodes using Dense Carbon Films
Akram B. Ismail, Charles Tai-Chieh Wan, Alexander H. Quinn, Fikile R. Brushett
Here, we outline a strategy to estimate electron transfer kinetics on electrode materials reminiscent of those used in RFBs. First, we describe a bottom-up synthetic process to produce non-porous and planar carbon films to enable evaluation of electron transfer kinetics using traditional electrochemical techniques. Next, we characterize physicochemical properties of the films using a suite of spectroscopic methods. Last, we assess the performance of the films in a custom-designed cell architecture, extracting intrinsic heterogeneous kinetic rate constants in iron-based aqueous electrolytes using standard electrochemical methods (i.e., cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). We anticipate that the methods and protocols described in this work are broadly applicable for quantitatively assessing electrocatalysts.

InfraredTags: 3D Printed, Instant-Read Invisible Codes using Mobile Infrared Cameras
Akshat Kumar, Mustafa Doga Dogan, Stefanie Mueller
We introduce InfraredTags embedding interface that allows users to implant codes anywhere in any 3D shape without sacrificing the look, feel, or functionality of the object, finally printing that object in order to detect it using the InfraredTag imaging tool. This will enable new ways and applications to interact with any 3D objects, such as using existing/arbitrary objects as pointers or game controllers or remotely controlling appliances and devices in an augmented reality environment. Finally, we evaluate the accuracy of our method under different lighting conditions, when objects were printed with different filaments, and with pictures taken from various positions and angles.

Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Materials
Maida Raza, Dr Sally Haslanger
As background, in Homa Bay County, of which Oyugis is part, 94% of boys and 69% of girls complete primary school. The Population Council reports that 66% of females between the ages of 13-19 cite adolescent pregnancy as an imperative reason for dropping out of school. Moreover, Kenya’s National HIV (2020) survey shows that the prevalence of HIV/AIDS among women is 6.6%, compared to 3.1% in men.
It is hard to determine whether teenage pregnancy and/or STIs are causing lower levels of education amongst women, vice versa, or both, in a looping process. Therefore, we are interested in exploring whether youth access to SRH tangible and intangible resources - including sex education, contraception/abortion, and treatment for STIs - in Kasipul Sub County, Kenya, contribute to girls’ higher dropout rate.
Based on our findings, we will provide practical recommendations to our partners in Kenya to combat teenage pregnancy, rampant cases of HIV/AIDS, and other STIs amongst adolescents and keep girls in the school. We hope that these improvements will contribute to long-term improvements in gender equality levels in Oyugis, Kenya.
